How to make object look smooth

Hi! I've looked at nehe but couldn't find any article or tutorial how to make an object look more smooth. I managed to create an object using OpenGL. It's a hand, but I can't make it look more natural. It feels like there an OpenGL function that could fix my problem. Hope you can help out. Thanks!

You need to specify normals for each vertex, i.e. a vertex normal. You can compute a vertex normal by using the normals of the surrounding faces and calculating the average of them, here's a clicky and another clicky that should help you along your way.
