Does something like Subimages exist?

I saw people talking about subimages a few times, but what did they mean? I'd like to have something like arrays of textures, the way you could represent .GIF animations without timeing.

subimages are just images which are part of another image, for example there is an API function to allow you to update only part of a texture which is called glTexSubImage(), so say you had a 128*128 texture you could use that function to update one 64*64 section of it without effecting the rest of the texture.

In the case of animations people tend to pack all the frames into one texture and then just change the texture coords to get at the right bit. You'd still need timing however or you wouldnt know when to swap to the new texture coords to display the right bit of the image
