mesh speed problem with pics

this first picture is my model editor running 60 frames per second with 862 vertices and 1474 triangles. its going alright. [link] http://www.geocities.com/magnus_wootton/shot0.jpg [/link] this next picture is the same model after 3 seg tesselation and now its going 10 frames per second with 11184 vertices and 13266 triangles. going very poorly. [link] http://www.geocities.com/magnus_wootton/shot1.jpg [/link] can u please show me how to display pictures... anyway, just put it into your browser. anyway, that should seem strange when i tell you i can draw a soup of 20000 triangles at full speed.. i have no idea whats happening can you please help me out

two important questions:

-what API are you using? (is it a hardware API, for instance)
-how are you using it? if youre using opengl for example, does the word display list ring a bell?

its dx9.
its a vertex buffer and index buffer getting
filled by a structure i declared.
that seems to be the problem, whats the solution?
