Edge finding techniques

I know there's the Sobel and Prewitt filters, but are there any other faster filters or methods of finding edges, even if sacrificing a little bit of quality?

not really. you can gain some speed by combinging the sobel horizontal and verticle steps, or try laplace
0 -1 0
-1 4 -1
0 -1 0

plus, plenty of processor specific optimizations such as mmx,sse or shifts.
