Render to variable sized target

Is it possible to render to a variable sized target. When setting things up you either specify a hard coded size or use the size of a target window. But if the window is resizeable the rendering will be stretched instead of resized. Is there some solution to this? Or at least a decent workaround? I need pixel perfect resolution so using a too large buffer and shrinking it is not an option. Using Direct3D9.

Reset D3D device to create a new backbuffer with new window size.
Then set a proper projection matrix for your new window size.
It will work ok.
