Trouble Working With Open Source App

[using VC++ 6.0] I have a game that ships with source code (Heretic 2 - a little outdated). I'm trying to run it line by line ("step in"), but I'm having trouble. Before allowing me to run it, it prompts for an executable for the debug session. The code ships with a .dsw file, and I used the build button to build it - I don't know what more it could want from me. The only .exe that ships with the game is the actual game, and that "does not contain debugging information". Why does this message show up, and how can I get rid of it?

Is it possible that you are trying to run the source from one of the games dll's (if the game is in the dll and engine in exe). This is the only place i could think that you would get this kind of message.

I'm not familiar with the code or the game so might be wrong about that. Maybe the game only shipped with the game source (dll) and not the full engine (exe).

Is there just one project? If there's more than one project in the workspace, I'd guess that you have the wrong project set as the startup project, and there's one there that's configured to build as an executable.

If there's only one project, check if it's configured to build as an exe. If it's not, maybe the project config is wrong, although that seems like a long shot. You can try searching the code - a DLL should have a DllMain() function somewhere, a Win32 exe should have a WinMain(), and a DOS exe (I've forgotten how old Heretic 2 is) should have a main().

If it's the only project and it's configured to build as an exe, perhaps the project's debug settings are set to start up an external exe. In that case, maybe the project config's wrong, or maybe you're missing an exe.

Looks like both files are configured to build dll's. However, the strange thing is, I've searched for both DllMain() and WinMain(), and they're nowhere to be found. I have absolutely no idea where the program entry point is.

The workspace contains 2 projects, both configured to build dll's. Upon trying to execute the program, under any configuration, the same message comes up, asking for executable for debug session. I tried the give it the .exe of the actual game, but that doesn't work. I'm sure it's possible to debug this program, but I don't know how. Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: Oh yeah, I was going to mention that this looks like a Win32 project and it's written in C, if it makes any difference.

Stupid question, but: you did make sure that when you try to debug you are building in debug mode? This is separate from trying to run the debugger and requires you to recompile the project. That is where the debug information comes from in an ordinary VC++ project -- compiling in debug mode. If you look on one of the tool bars, there should be a little combo box that says either Debug or Release. Make sure it is set to Debug and then rebuild the project before you try to actuall run the application in debug mode.

I did that from the start. I tried all configurations, debug, release, and final, even though the last two were pointless attempts, since I'm trying to single step here.

EDIT: And not only single-step, of course. I even tried just plain executing, from either configuration, but not even that worked.

It looks like what you have there is a game mod SDK - not full source. My guess is that if you change the code in the DLLs and replace the original DLLs with your customised versions, you'll be able to modify the game.
