I was wondering if anyone knew of any good tutorials or articles that explained indepth about what a compiler actually does. And it would even be more appreciated if there were any on visual c++. Thank you.

A compiler is a program that accepts text files and translates them into binary files which may then be submitted to a linker so that it may produce an executable file from said files.

They generally do this in three steps:

a.) Parse text to create an abstract syntax tree (AST) and flag errors where the submitted text does not fit the grammar.
b.) Perform some optimisations on the AST.
c.) Output binary file in target format.

For websites explaining it, this looks ok. Otherwise, invest in a book.
