OpenGL road traffic simulator

Hello there! I am doing my final year project and the topic is a road traffic simulator. I am using opengl with VC++. I modelled a car as 2d square where i was using glutpostredisplay() to make the 'car' look to be moving. But this wont do as the design needs to be dynamic. What i reaally need is how to make a square(car) follow a path(road). which will consist of curves, roundabouts, junctions... PLease help me friends, i badly need your help.And i will most appreciate if am provided with code so that i can build on these.
