2-D Help!

Anyone know of some good 2-d engine material (code, books, sites) they can recommend. I'm learning and am interested in doing some 2-d sprite-based work... Mostly I need help on how to handle a a decent number of sprites (20+) moving independently... Approach or code material would be helpful. Thanks! Steve

Actually, I'm currently make a small game engine, called DGI. Of course, it's still in the early stages of development, but if you want some of the source code (once I finally fix it) just tell me. I'll be happy to help.

Look into SDL. It's very, VERY easy to use and a good starting point for getting into 2D game developement. :)

On top of that, you can easily hook it up to OpenGL afterwards and branch off into 3D, so your knowledge isn't all in vain by the time you decide to move ahead a bit. ;)
