OpenGL Quadrics

I was wondering what actually is the use of Quadrics in OpenGL.. after all one would not want to draw just cylinders and cones .. and most of the data coming from FILES y would one want the quadric functions?

Perhaps you are throwing together a quick prototype of something, and just want to use something stupid - like a cone or a cylinder - to represent whatever it is you're prototyping.

remember you can texture the quadrics, and you can draw spheres, cones, and (partial) disks.
textured cones seem pretty useful to me (towers in a city for instance).
