best way to manage online data

back in the day when i used to play D2 and i could use the sniffer to see all the packets that were sent, they were all in dwords, ect. Currently in my game i am using strings which is extrememly annoying. Example user:user1:user2:ect. I use that to send the user list to the client for wispering/inviting. i have many other messages that i use for all the command. This way does not seem to be very good cause i have to keep braking down each string to get the data i want out of it. What way do the pros use? like in WoW or UT2k4? any help would be great thx Jake
