tutorial on iso engines

Some time ago I got really pissed about the fps2d tile engine for allegro (messed up my multifile project, poor collision detection etc) and decided to write an own very basic tile engine... the result was that after a week or so I got stuck in middle of some poor designs I had been thinking about and abandoned the project... now I''m using MSVC++ 6, opengl, bass lib etc and I was wondering if there were tutorials available about how to write basic 2d tile engines... I supose I could add features like layers, lighting, pixelperfect collision detection etc little by little if I had a basic thing running first...
