Software Particle systems and blending

Ok this is probally a stupid question but what kind of blending of particles can be achieved in software. I have made a OGL particle system and now am making a 2-D software one. Using OGL blending + antialising a whole bunch of of particles could look like a cloud or even fire as they where blended what about in software, if I blit a whole bunch of sprites together whey will look like sprites not like fire or clouds, how can one do blending of there particles in software. You could use different colored pixels and blend them together instead of using sprites and trying to get them to work how you want them to work.
