Buying a game engine
I am taking OOP1 next term and after that I will buy a game engine. Is this a good idea or should I wait. I am a pretty good programmer who has a group to work with.
Delta3D is another good choice. (http://www.delta3d.org) My team is currently finishing up the design phase of the level editor which will make its debut in early May. The engine itself is being developed by the Naval Post Graduate school out in CA. Without the level editor, you will have plenty to work on figuring out the engine and such.
Well with the one I was looking at like torque it comes with tech support and will cost me $150.00 but I will check out the ones you suggested first. This has a graphics editor and none of us know any graphics.
If you are going to buy an engine, and don't have much money, I have heard of the garagegames Torque engine. I know the guys over at UT are using that for their game, and I believe one of the Tribes games used the Torque engine. Head on over to the www.garagegames.com website if it sounds interesting.
One thing that I'll probably do after a little bit more learning (such as what you're doing right now) is buy that new "Programming a Multiplayer FPS" book and piece that together and write an engine off of that. So, in other words, reading material and making your own engine may be a really good way to go.

Ogre is a graphics rendering engine not a game engine but that doesn't stop it from rocking the world.
I would recommend torque (http://www.garagegames.com) for a full blown game engine. It only costs 100 dollars and is quite amazing. I don't know of any other game engines as fast, as well proven (lots of titles have been shipped on it). It has an amazing community and is very cheap.

I quess Garagegames it is then. I know I will be stuck on that for a while being I am not an expert but it will be fun for my team to takle that out.
You can also try Truevision3D. You can develop with it for free, and the license is cheap if you do decide to buy it. =)
Irrlicht is quite good. It's free, and also fast, although it doesn't have all of the graphics features of OGRE, like shaders(which Torque doesn't have either), it is still a mostly full blown game engine. It also doesn't take 2 GB to compile like OGRE.

Cheers, and good luck!

Allow me to throw in the obligatory plug for Panda3D. It was developed at Disney for Toontown, but it's free software now. It's pretty good.
