I am working on learning direct3d and want to get software for creating 3d models. Does anyone have any suggestions on a high quality software package for 3d modeling to look into? I'm wondering what software is out there that creates models that are easily transferrable to direct3d.

Look into Milkshape if you are on a tight budget.
If you have 2500-4000 to spend on it look at 3D Studio Max or Maya.
Those are the best two modeling packages you will find IMO

For level design I use Quark and for model design I use gmax.
Quark is free and creates map files that I can parse.
GMax (also free) feels like Studio Max 3D and with a md2 exporter I'm all set.

Cheers

Aye, I'd recommend the same.
I was lucky enough to use 3DSMax for a while, but nowadays I'm using Blender (free) which was better than I expected (after I got over the 'innovate' interface).
