Vertex skinning: file format?

Hello.. I'm reading a bit about vertex skinning and I would like to know whether a special file format is necessary for this approach.(?) Is vertex skinning possible with the common *.obj and *.3ds file formats? If not, which file formats do support vertex skinning? Thanks in advance for any reply.. ciao..
