Are my megahurtz being stolen?

I'm getting a bit suspicious at the moment.
I've been connected to the internet for about 5 days, and already my computer is acting strangely. Very much so. My computer has restarted itself twice (although it may just be my roommate.. I'll get back to you on that) and it's running slow as hell, because random processes are suddenly using up, say, 900MB of virtual memory. I can't do a lot to stop it because it takes so long to actually open the task manager. It's affected Thunderbird, Apache, Explorer and MSN messenger so far..
Currently Explorer is using 991300K of virtual memory and "msnmsgr" (I assume MSN messenger, although I thought that was msnmsgs) is using 257712K. I checked for trojans that I know of.. None I can see.

The biggest one in mine is about 170MB VM [Photoshop 7].
Sounds to me like you've got something really nasty on there... [sad]
I'd say go for the reinstall Windows route, but that might be a tad premature. Have you tried rolling back to an earlier system restore point?

or if thats not an option (and its too late for that anyway), i would like to welcome you to 2005 and recommend to install a virusscanner and some anti spyware tools.
youre probably done fastest if you reformat your machine: getting any virusscanner to work properly on an already infested computer proves to be quite hard.

Some viruses can be removed. I was hoping it was just a "friend" playing with prorat (backdoor.prorat trojan), because that's easy to get rid of.
Ad-aware found 12 critical objects, although they don't seem critical to me.
I wouldn't really want to roll back to another restore point.. Not until I've tried everything else. I've been making a lot of changes recently, and a lot of them might get lost.
PS. Does the picture work for anyone else? It works for me, but some people say it doesn't exist

I'm using the Tiger.msstyles, which is a MacOS skin. I've tried lots of skins and I hate them all, so I'm just going to wait until I make my own.
I hate this. It's increased my pagefile size to 1Gb, and erased all my disk cache. It is stealing my gigabytes/megahurtz!

I see your problem............ its what’s know as "Steamius Crapius" this common virus manifests itself into an exe called steam. This virus then takes over your PC overwriting files and deleting others. It also sits in the background waiting for you to do something important and its at that moment it decides to utilise your CPU into overdrive and kill you network connection, remove this threat immediately.
