Simple DirectSound Tutorial

I'm looking for a bare bones DirectSound example that plays a sound in 3d. I'm in the middle of making a sound manager, but my sound doesnt play and I have no idea why. I've gone though the DXSDK examples, but the going through the 24,615 lines of code in the "Play3DSound" tutorial is proving pointless. I've googled it too and can't find anything.... anyone know of a good tutorial?

DirectSound has a *lot* of little nuiances, it took me forever to get my own sound manager up and running correctly. These two docs helped me a bit, though they are a bit dated at this point:
