Text rendering

What method do YOU use for rendering text? I'm using FTGL (bitmapped) for my text rendering, but it seems to be rather slow... Anyone got any comparisons between FTGL and other methods?

According to the PLIB site: "The FNT library was originally written to allow PUI programs to produce text using texture maps instead of bitmaps because the latter are typically very slow on consumer-grade 3D hardware."
