Silly question about D3DX stuff

I've done a few OpenGL things, and now I'm starting Direct3D. In OpenGL, there's a lot of glu* functions that handle a lot of the dirty work -- but you can implement all these yourself using the more basic gl* functions. Does "D3DX" mean that it's a utility function... like X standing for extension or something? Or does it just stand for Direct3D-X, because D3DX sounds cooler than D3D or DX3D? Wow... all of a sudden Direct-X sounds like a stupid name.
