Star problem

Okay so i'm creating an environment where i have a landscape generated via heightmap that is 1024*1024, i've got a sphere overlooking as a light source that is at 2000x2000x2000 but not moving at the moment... however i want to create background stars using the GL_POINTS function and have done but unsuccessfuly... whenever i try random points i get some stars infront of the sphere but when i prohibit them via the Z axis i end up with all the stars on the edge of my viewpoint all clumped together. I'm using GL4JAVA not by choice but because the uni said so :) and am currently stumped.. any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
