My device reseting fails with 1-10% chance
I used to have more major problems with alt tabbing, but now they are gone and it works seamlessly most of the time but 'they' introduced me to a new problem, Yay!
Sometimes, like with 1-10% chance, when trying to set focus back to the game it doesn't reset the graphical devices or something and leaves the user with a black screen which doesn't even go in the full-screen mode and the music is playing on the background. After that, when pressing ctrl + alt + del to go in the task manager to close it, it does it automatically for you by crashing the program.
Any possible reasons why it does this? The only thing I could think of is that some annoying program grabs some of the memory where the textures / other device reseting info is. That annoying program is propably MSN Messenger if this is the reason.
It does this on both Win2k and XP sometimes.
Is it possible it's losing focus to something other than the video? I had a problem way back when it was doing the same as you said, but the problem turned out the keyboard was losing focus, and that had the side effect to screwing up the video draw. My point is, you may want to cut it down to minumum processes and see if it is the video that is killing ya, or if maybe it's something else that is interacting with the draw.
Use remote debugging, turn the debug runtimes on (with max output) for the target machine, watch the output window. The debug runtime *will* tell you why it's failing if it is a directx resource issue. If you cannot remote debug, I can tell of a way to debug device reset on a single machine.
