future game programming on windows longhorn
I am curious to know the opinions of game developers out there, "Will games for the PC, specifically the new Windows Operating System (aka Longhorn) be developed in managed (ie. C#) or unmanaged (i.e. C++/ASM) code?"
The reason I ask is b/c I keep hearing that everything is going to be managed code in the Longhorn version of windows, thus does that mean just Managed DirectX API ?
Thanks.
Well thats a good question but just so you know C++ isn't going to die out anytime soon so no worries there although C# is gaining popularity and speed as far as development goes and as far as ASM yeah it's still used and I am sure still going to be used in some instances for years to come. So as far as how games will be programmed in the comming years no one really knows but I personally think that it shouldn't be an issue. My feeling is to go with the flow if everything does migrate to C# then so be it. I am sure C++ programmers will not have too hard of a time adjusting.[smile]
You can check this thread. It contains the view of some of them about longhorn, plus links that may interest you :)

You have to remember that these apis are just tools and everyone has different needs. Some will go with C#/.net combo some will keep coding in C++. It depends on your needs, whether it makes sense to port your old project to new apis, etc. Just too many variables.
