how do YOU program

just a general sort of wonderingment really... how do you go about making programs - do you 1) code everything in long drawn out chunks and then after you''ve finished it all try to build it and fix the errors or 2) do you program a little bit, build it, fix the errors, get it to work properly, program a little bit more, etc... i know i do it the second way, i was just wondering if anyone actually does the first way...
