does anyone have a link to a tutorial where they do some code to render terrain, but have it less detailed in the distance? (ie. more polys near and fewer further) opengl, please.

While focus on terrain rendering is a pretty decent book, I'd highly recommend programming terrain engines with directx9. This has nothing to do with the underlying api. The latter book has way more organized code and a complete and fully functional terrain engine that comes with the book and is fully explained in the book as well. The author also updates his engine every now and then. It also explains various effects and techniques that the former book fails to do. And it is shader centric - more modern. Not only do you learn about terrain rendering methods (which the internet is pretty good for anyway), but you learn how to stitch everything together.
