There was a sample on the DX7 SDK which displayed a mosquito over the desktop, and I was wondering if anyone knows a link to this sample on the web or has it and could send it to me. Also, can something similar be done with new versions of DirectX? If so, does anyone have any sample code? I'm trying to do a simple animation (maybe a video) that is displayed on top of the desktop. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Just a friendly tip, note that using overlays isn't exactly optimal for just "a simple animation" as overlays are commonly used to display content on the secondary monitor (movies) and might likely cause certain issues, and thus making one color unavailable. (also all devices doesn't support overlays)

There is the documentation for it.

Hmm, thanks for the link! But then what would be the best way to do what I want? There's a program out there that puts the animation of a dancer over your taskbar, without a window surrounding it, and that's is what I want. Any clues? BTW, I'm posting this on the DirectX forum, but I accept suggestions of other APIs (SDL, OpenGL, GDI, etc).
