problem with glAlphaFunc values

i got my alpha test to not draw stuff that is black or has a value of 0. The thing is that when i do that, the image is jaged and not plesent to look at. So i thought i would just take the edge of the image and give them a diff alpha value so i can draw just the edges with some blending, and linear filtering. And if it still looks bad add some AA to that. But the thing is i cant find the alpha value for the lighter colour which is gray. How do i find the alpha value between 0.0 and 1.0 so that i can just draw wat i want? thx in advanded jake
