I really like Microsoft's ReadFile function, which just reads a block of data in directly from a file (unformatted). Is there a platform-independent version of this function that anyone knows of? Like an fmemcpy or something?

fstream fin( filename, ios_base::in | ios_base::binary ) is another possibility. It's a class, so you may indeed prefer the fopen/fread/fseek/fclose functions.

int fread( FILE*, int numBlocks, int lenBlocks, void* buffer );

It's in the <stdio.h> standard libary. Returns the number of blocks successfully read from the file and written to your buffer. (lenBlocks) is the length of each block, in bytes.
