glDrawPixels and Textures

I'm having a lot of problems with texture mapping. I'm not sure where the problem is, but I've tried a number of things that leads me to beleive that the problem is with the data that I'm feeding to glTexImage2D (I'm using my own bitmap loader). But the funny thing is that glDrawPixels has no trouble with the data. Do glDrawPixels and glTexImage2D expect the same type of data? Can I assume that my data is fine if for glTexImage2D if it works for glDrawPixels?

Standard checks:

Are your textures a power of 2 in width and height?
Do you either disable mipmapping or generate mipmaps for your texture?
(Mipmapping is enabled by default)
