Need windowed mode mouse cursor suggestion

Hi, my game works well in fullscreen and windowed modes. My questions is concerning the best way to handle mouse input. Basically I keep track of the mouse positions (DirectInput) and draw a cursor at the right place. In windowed mode, however, you should be able to move to another program or whatever. I'm thinking I should release the mouse when the game is paused or something like that, but then you can't use the game cursor to select "unpause" inside the game GUI. The best idea I have right now is to show BOTH cursors at once, whenever the game is paused, and the 'game' cursor basically just gets stuck at the edges of the window if you move the cursor to the taskbar/another app/etc. How have other people handled this issue?
