Problems Loading Mesh Hierarchy

Hi all, I've been using This Tutorial to attempt to load an animated tiny.x into my project. I finally managed to construct a bit of code that compiled, however, when trying to load the model, I get a runtime error.
     SkinnedMeshHierarchyAllocator smha(this);

     hr = D3DXLoadMeshHierarchyFromX(filename, D3DXMESH_MANAGED, d3dgrabber.getDevice(), 
               &smha, NULL, &pFrameRoot, &pAnimController);
     if (FAILED(hr))
		MessageBox(NULL, "LOAD ERROR", "ERROR", MB_OK);



I know that trying to obtain the device from another class is causing one problem, as this function will always fail and return D3DERR_INVALIDCALL. When I tried to assimilate it into my general graphics code, it went through my SkinnedMeshHierarchyAllocator's functions to create frames and mesh containers, but after finishing that, I still received the "LOAD ERROR" message box and the program exited (null pointer probably). I can't figure out what is causing the problem then, as this line of code looks almost identical to the code in the SkinnedMesh sample with the SDK.
