Model Color

I loaded a model's verts into a vertex buffer. I'd like to be able to set the color of the model based on the instance of the object (ie: 10 instances -- all using the same mesh, all have different colors). I searched and found information about using RS_RSTEXTUREFACTOR and D3DTA_TFACTOR. This worked fine for changing the alpha but I could never get the colors to change. As a test I have a sphere with a solid white texture and am trying to make multiple spheres with different colors, using a single vertex buffer, rendering it multiple times with different TEXTUREFACTOR values. Should this work or is there another technique I should use?
