Unicode support in D3DXFONT

As the title presumes, I can't figure out how to display unicode characters(Japanese) correctly using D3DXFONT.To make it short ,I have narrowed down my problem to this: How can I load japanese charecters properly from a text file? The text file essentially contains both ASCII characters as well as japanese embedded in it.Further more, do I have to make distinctions between ASCII and Unicode encoding by myself? If so,how do I determine which encoding is used for the upcoming characters(or current characters)? Or C++ STD has build in support do the job?Many many thanks. This problem has driven me crazy.Please helllllllllllllp.....
