Heat wave effect

Hi, What kind of geometry do you use for heat wave effect? I used a grid (consisting of several quads) to do heat distortion effect (for fire barrel, and stuffs) But, i'm not quite sure about heat wave (for making realistic explosion). Any suggestion? ps: i'm programming on ps2 (playstation2, not pixel shader 2 :p) so, no shader programming please.

Well.. copy part of the background to a texture. Then render lots of that texture in almost the same place.. a bit displaced by a sin function. PS2 also.. :)

Not quite sure what you mean by heatwave but.. most things about the explosions, the artists made. An animation and particle effect. And the thing mentioned above. Looks rather nice.. :)
