i've seen a couple of level editors saying they export to the .x file format with lightmapping. can anyone tell me how they are then rendered? i've only seen .x files used that have 1 texture per material, so is some heavy modification needed to do this? thanks.

There's nothing preventing you from using more than one texture per material when using .x files. However, note that by default, .x files can only have one set of texture coordinates. It is possible to add more texture coordinates but to do that you'd have to extend the .x file format, which isn't the easiest thing in the world to do.

As far as lightmapping is concerned, if the level editor you're using can output a lightmap to be used with an .x file, you just need to have your renderer use the lightmap when it renders the mesh. More than likely, the lightmap is created in such a way where the same set of texture coordinates that you use for your normal textures can also be used to access the lightmap.
