Metallic Shader Formula

Hi, I'm looking for a formula for a metallic shader. It should outline the edges of the object. I thought it would make sense to darken the current pixel if the dot product of the normal and the direction to the camera was somewhere around zero, but that didn't work. Any suggestions please?
