I was wondering if anyone knew if it were possible to render a scene whitout putting it to the screen, and instead saving the color information in memory. In DirectX this would be rending to a hidden surface, and I was wondering if a similar thing could be done in OpenGL

you could render the scene, copy it to a texture and then clear the rendered area. Thats one way, another way would be to use pBuffers. A new extension EXT_FrameBuffer_Object should be out soon enough which will replace pBuffers and allow you to do it more easily.

So yes its possible to do it in OpenGL aswell
