Maya Model exporting

I know how to import models into my game by exporting them as VRML2 files from Maya, however when I get the data for a polygon face It does not come out as individual triangles, it comes out as 4, 5 or more vertices that define a face. Therefore I can only render polygoms with these vertex counts using GL_TRIANGLE_FAN or GL_POLYGON, because obviously a triangle can only have three points. Due to this, my in game polygons look sometimes incomplete. My question is how do I change the 4,5... vertices data into triangles. Or how do I export the data so It comes out as individual triangle data rather then an arbitary amount of vertices. Thanx to anyone who reads this and replies.
