Displaying pixels

I'm trying to display bitmaps to the screen, unfortunately when I do it using glDrawPixels(), sometimes it works, and sometimes it completely crashes my computer. Even without changing any of the code, sometimes it will display to the screen, and other times it crashes. I was wondering what the problem might be. Coule it be that I'm displaying 24 bit information to a 16 bit screen?
