If you've inited DX before I would suggest using Direct Draw 7 and find the MS sample DDUtil.h / DDUtil.cpp It'll let you draw bitmaps and stuff with very little effort.

You should definetely go for some physics stuff. If you want, I made a particle simulator, with gravity and elastic collisions, in C+allegro. You might want to check it out:

A small text adventure, with scripting support (with virtual machine), with own language and compiler.

Now, that would be very very very showoffable. (then again, it is C, so you might not be able to do it....)
