static pointer in class problem

Heres the code class BettingLayout { }; class TableBets { protected: static BettingLayout* m_Parent; }; I get an error Linking... TableBets.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol "protected: static class BettingLayout * TableBets::m_Parent" (?m_Parent@TableBets@@1PAVBettingLayout@@A) Basically i want the m_Parent variable to be a static pointer to an object of type BettingLayout, but i get the error above when linking can anyone help?

You have to define the instance somewhere too.
Place the following line in the source file containing TableBets.
BettingLayout *TableBets::m_Parent;
