Underlining with new ID3DXFont

I recently upgraded to the latest version of the SDK, and I noticed that several changes have been made to the ID3DXFont interface. They seem to have removed the ability to create an underlined font using D3DXCreateFont and you can no longer underline a character by prefacing it with an amperstand. Is there an easy way to underline a font in the newest update, or do you have to manually draw a line underneath the text?
