I need a free java IDE and complier to start programming in java, but i dont know where to look. Thanks

BlueJ is pretty good for things like academic assignments but it probably wouldn't be a good option for a large project.

I have to second the motion. Eclipse is a wonderful IDE, and even though people say it is complicated, its features are excellent for the new programmer.
Eclipse is the last free Java IDE/compiler you will ever need.
I downloaded the java stuff from sun but im having problems, it might not work on my system. I have windows 98 SE with 64mb of ram and 20gb of hard drive space.

i like JCreater LE.

but if you want to ultimate IDE, use Eclipse.
