Im confused as to how modeling and skinning and all that is done. Do we use 3ds Max and import them somehow, or do it all with directx? I was reading through some books (skimming more or lesS) and it said you could draw your models with directX, but that didnt sound right to me. Anyways, any advice is appreciated.

Yes you would use 3ds, or what I use is Milkshape 3D, which is quite a bit cheaper than 3ds!

You would then write some model loading and rendering code (NeHe has a few of these). Of course, if you are using DirectX you can export Milkshape objects into the *.x file format and use DXs built in loading and rendering code.
