I'm not sure where to start. What I want to do is connect to a video source such as a USB webcam; play a preview by default; and then peform a single frame capture and save to disk. I know this could be done with Video For Windows (VFW), but isn't that kind of old and almost obsolete? Wouldn't directX be better? (I've been programming in C/C++ for well over 20 years.) I think I need to use directShow, but I'm not sure. Any assistance or guidance would be appreciated. Thanks, Richard

Thanks very much.

Apparently, I was correct in assuming the starting point is directshow?

Also, is it true that VFW is essentially obsolete?

While I haven't used it myself, judging from this

Files in this format have a.AVI extension. AVI files are limited to 320 x 240 resolution, and 30 frames per second, neither of which is adequate for full-screen, full-motion video.

I'd say it's not well-suited for game development.
