the game that im designing now needs a way to notify the user if a one of its files has been corrupted or deleted. I thought about using the windows popup to display some kind of message. Is there something similar i can do in linux? Im not using SDL, this is before i load the libraries.

You could always just exit and leave a log file behind for the user stating what's wrong. Just tell the user if the application doesn't start correctly to check the log file before whining to you about it.

If you actually want a popup dialog, I guess I didn't really answer your question. [smile]
The two libraries that come to mind immediately for UI applications in UNIXen platforms are QT and GTK/GTK+.

In GTK+ you coud do something like this to show a message. Just create a function that'll show a message box and redo it for every operating system you decide to port it to.
