To make testing my Direct3D app easier I run it in a fullscreen window. However this window uses the whole screen, including the part underneath the startbar. So the bottom of my window is hidden. Can I easily find the window dimensions and position to use to exactly fill the whole screen apart from the startbar?

There's two solutions to your problem. First, if you want to actually cover the task bar, you need to use CreateWindowEx and pass it the WS_EX_TOPMOST flag. This will make sure you're always on top of every other window.

The solution to your actual question - that is, how to get the "usable" desktop size - is to use SystemParametersInfo and passing it the SPI_GETWORKAREA flag.
