using VMR9 custom allocator how to toggle to fullscreen?

I am using VMR9 custom allocator, my program will retrieve the video texture to display and it runs fine. However, now i want to enable toggling btw windowed and fullscreen. After the usual InvalidateDeviceObjects stuff, i called pd3dDevice->Reset() but that fails with a D3DERR_INVALIDCALL. Anybody has ideas how i could do a safe toggle. PS. the program can both in windowed and fullscreen mode fine. It's just that i cannot toggle during runtime.
