Blending modes

What would be a good blending mode for conecting diffrent terrain types, something thats blends diffrent based on color might works, i have 2 types joining and using multipass rendering for a smooth transition but its too smooth, Since going from grass to graval probably isnt goint to have a perfectly smooth transiton

but im using glColor4f(1.0f,1.0f,1.0f,X); on quads to specify the alpha so i only need 1 tile for each terrain type
