If you're using buffered data, you'll get messages saying that a key was pressed down, and then another saying it was released. If you're using non-buffered data, you check the device state to see if any of the BYTEs returned have the highest bit set (AND them with 0x80).
The DirectX SDK docs have a ton of information about this, including tutorials.
